As you may know, today at Grand Ledge High School, a district student wrote graffiti on a wall of the restroom that was perceived to be a threat, taken from the title of a movie.  The district takes threats very seriously and immediately notified police, and initiated an investigation to assure the safety and well being of our students and staff.

As of 8:30 pm, the High School administration has identified the individual that actually wrote the graffiti on the walls of the bathrooms.  The police have been notified, and most recently the police have had an opportunity to make a home visit to conduct a threat assessment.  This student will NOT be in attendance at the High School tomorrow.  

The district is also aware that 2 students posted photos of the graffiti on social media, rather than reporting the misconduct to school administrators or teachers.  While this poor choice did not result in negative consequences on this occasion, students need to be reminded that behavior of this nature must be immediately reported so that the district may promptly assure that everyone is safe. I urge you to remind your own children how important it is to report any concern they have to a teacher, an administrator or another responsible adult within the building IMMEDIATELY.  Together, we will continue to keep our school a safe place for everyone.

Please be assured that Grand Ledge Public Schools TOP priority is the safety and well being of our students and staff.  

At this time, it appears that the HS Administration has a clear understanding of all of the events that occurred today, and that any concern of the threat identified has been eliminated.

Superintendent Dr. Brian Metcalf wants to make you aware that this afternoon, at approximately 2:45 pm, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department notified the district that Willow Ridge Elementary School had a potential threat in the vicinity. Specifically, it was reported that someone had carjacked a vehicle near Broadbent and Willow, and that a suspect could still be in the area.

This notice came after Hayes Middle School students had already been released. 

Immediately upon notification, Willow Ridge Elementary was placed in a “Shelter in Place” status. Students and staff were secured within the building with all exterior doors locked; instruction still occurred within each classroom.

REMINDER:  Grand Ledge Public Schools will have a 2-hour delayed start for students tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30, 2015.  Students who ride the bus will be picked up two hours later than their regular pick up time.
