Dear Hayes Families,

Here is some news to get us into this snowy weekend…

NWEA Testing - UPDATE

As a part of regularly monitoring student progress, NWEA testing will occur in classrooms at Hayes from January 22nd-February 2nd. The dates have been slightly modified due to the recent inclement weather. Generally, 5th Graders will test from January 22nd-26th while 6th Graders will test January 29th-February 2nd. These are not meant to be stressful tests, but are simply to help teachers determine what areas of instruction to focus on next. We also use Delta Math, iXL, and classroom work to determine what additional interventions students may need to be successful.

Social Media Etiquette and Responsibility

Hayes is working with ERESA to develop some age appropriate lesson opportunities to help encourage students to demonstrate responsibility and etiquette on social media. These will occur in the coming weeks and will primarily be offered to 6th grade students in their homeroom classes.

Closed campus during school hours

We have been noticing some visitors on school property during operational school hours. Although most people mean no harm, the school must maintain some closed boundaries in order to maintain student safety. Accordingly, some new signage will be visible as well as some barriers. We are working with the School Safety Coordinator to maximize the security of the school while also maintaining some access to our public locations.

Winter is Here!

We go out for recess all winter long, unless it is bitterly cold or wet. (Our standard for outside recess is that the “feels like” temperature is above 0 degrees.) Please make sure your student wears a coat, boots, gloves/mittens, and a hat each day. At lunch, students are expected to bring their winter gear to the cafeteria so they can enjoy lunch recess. Students without boots are expected to stay on the pavement during recess so they are less likely to get muddy and wet. If you need assistance providing your student with any of the aforementioned items, please contact Lisa Nelson in our office.

Lost and Found

Is your student missing that nice, new winter coat? Or perhaps that fancy Stanley Cup? Or even a single mitten? Check out our lost and found near the cafeteria. Most students walk by each day without even giving it a second look. Due to space constraints, lost and found items are cleaned out and donated every couple of months.
