Dear Hayes Intermediate School Families,

We are looking forward to meeting many of you over the next week in anticipation of seeing everyone on the first day of school, August 30th! As the school year progresses, you can typically plan to receive regular email communication from the school in addition to messages received from your student’s teacher. Some information may be repeated from week to week.

Assistant Principal Scott Millbrook - This will be Scott’s third year at Grand Ledge Public Schools after working as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for Five years at Lakewood Middle School. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Students at Grand Ledge High School as well as a classroom and physical education teacher at Potterville Elementary.

Times/Classes
Hayes Intermediate students will start school at 7:40 AM and end the school day at 2:20 pm. Students will be assigned a homeroom teacher who will have a teaching partner. The students will learn from both teachers throughout the day. For example, the homeroom teacher may teach math and science and the partner teacher will teach reading/writing and social studies. In addition, 5th Grade students will have “specials” (Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology) along with an enrichment class each trimester. 6th Grade students will have enrichment classes each trimester and either Band or the “specials.”

Who is my teacher?

Your student’s teacher/class information will be available in PowerSchool the morning of August 23rd. While we hope that the teaching assignment is certain for your student, sometimes a change will need to be made to a student schedule. If a student’s class assignment needs to change, we will let you know.

Optional Hayes Preview Day - August 23rd - 12:00-3:00 PM or 4:00-7:00 PM

We will host a low-key Hayes Preview Day on August 23rd from 12:00-3:00 PM and again from 4:00-7:00 PM. On this day, families are invited to come to Hayes Intermediate School as they please to find out who their student’s homeroom teacher will be, walk the hallways, and learn the location of their student’s classrooms. This self-guided event is designed to help students gain confidence while orienting themselves to the building. It is primarily meant for incoming 5th graders and those new to Hayes Intermediate, but any student is welcome to attend with their family. Many families have indicated that it is difficult to get to multiple buildings during the official “Open House” day in the time allotted, therefore, we will have the school open during this additional time. Teachers will not be present in classrooms for this event, but our school counselors will be on hand.

Optional Hayes Intermediate Open House - August 29th - 4:30-6:00 PM

During this event, families are invited to come to the school to, again, find out who their student’s homeroom teacher will be, walk the hallways, and learn the location of their student’s classrooms while also meeting their homeroom teacher! We expect this event to be well attended and know that parking will be a challenge. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while navigating the congestion on Nixon Road, in the parking lot, and in the hallways.

School Supply List

This is a suggested list of supplies your student may bring to school. Please know all items are not needed for the very beginning of the school year. Your child's classroom teacher may request additional items based on specific classroom needs. While students will be assigned a locker in the first few weeks of school, students will not have a desk in which to keep supplies, so supplies will need to be kept to necessary items only.

  • Pencils or Mechanical Pencils
  • Pencil Case/Pouch
  • Personal Pencil Sharpener
  • Eraser Caps/Eraser
  • Colored Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Dry Erase Board Markers
  • 4 Single Subject Notebooks

  • Glue Sticks
  • Pair of Scissors
  • Headphone/Earbuds
  • Water Bottle (not glass)

Your student’s classroom teacher will let you know which type of organizational system your student will be using - three ring binder with folders or just folders.

Odds and Ends

School Pictures will be on September 14th, during the school day. Look for information communication on this after the school year begins. Lockers will be distributed by teachers during the first week of school. Each student will be assigned their own locker as close as possible to their classroom and they will have plenty of time to learn their combination before they are expected to use it.
